Today the City Administration in Smederevo welcomed successful young athletes from Kickboxing Club “SD Kombat”, Jovan Sekulić and Aleksandar Menković, who returned to Smederevo from recent prestigious competitions with important medals and trophies, spreading the fame of their home town around the world.
As a reminder, at the World Junior Championships in Budapest, eighteen-year-old Jovan Sekulić from Smederevo won first place in the up to 81 kg category. Competing against fighters from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Moldova and Ukraine, he won all three of his bouts and was the best junior in our national team.
At the prestigious “Senshi” event in the Bulgarian city of Varna, twenty-seven-year-old Aleksandar Menković fought a professional bout and won a major victory, which opened the way for him to compete at the forthcoming European Championships in Athens. Aleksandar Menković was also named Smederevo’s best athlete for 2023 and holds numerous titles from world and European competitions.
“On behalf of the City of Smederevo and in my own name, I congratulate you on your achievements and hope that you will represent our city successfully at future competitions too and return to it with medals and trophies, which we, as your supporters, always welcome. The City of Smederevo has been investing in sport for years, and we will continue in that direction in the coming period. We will pay more attention to sports infrastructure: the existing facilities must be reconstructed, and we will also set priorities for building new sports facilities,” the Mayor of Smederevo, Jasmina Vojinović, said at the formal reception organised for the athletes from Kickboxing Club “SD Kombat”.
The President of the City Assembly, Milan Perić, and Dragan Đorđević, Member of the City Council responsible for sport, also addressed the athletes with congratulations and words of support, announcing that the City plans to set up a special fund in future to reward athletes who achieve the best results at world and European competitions, which will encourage others to follow the same path.
