About Smederevo

Smederevo is a city and the seat of the Podunavlje District. It lies on the banks of the Danube in north-eastern Serbia.

With the construction of Smederevo Fortress in 1430, Smederevo became the capital of the Serbian Despotate, after Belgrade, the previous capital, had been returned to Hungary in 1427. Smederevo Fortress was founded by the Serbian Despot of the time, Đurađ Branković. At that time it was the largest lowland fortress in Europe.

Today, Smederevo is a major industrial centre.
