Climate

The main climatic characteristics of the City of Smederevo are determined by its geographical position, atmospheric circulation, relief and degree of continentality. To the north lies the vast Pannonian Plain, whose climatic influence extends far to the south, along the Velika Morava valley. The openness of the Pannonian Plain favours frequent winds, especially in winter. This area also has the highest frequency and strength of the košava wind in Serbia. The most frequent winds are southerly, northerly and south-easterly.
The climate of Smederevo is favourable for the development of agriculture. The period with mean daily temperatures above 10 °C lasts 205 days on average. The frost-free period lasts 206 days, which is favourable for growing cereals and fruit.
January is the coldest month of the year and also the only month with a negative mean monthly temperature. July is the warmest month of the year.
Considerably greater temperature fluctuations are recorded in the winter months. The amplitude between the absolute warmest month (August, 23.8 °C) and the absolute coldest month (January, -5.9 °C), at 29.7 °C, is much greater than the mean annual fluctuation of 20.8 °C. In August, the temperature can rise to 39 °C, and in January it can fall as low as -25.5 °C. The difference between the absolute maximum and minimum temperatures is 64.5 °C.
