Social and humanitarian organisations working in Smederevo marked the “Day of Togetherness” at Smederevo Fortress.
This event, unique in Serbia, was an opportunity to highlight the importance of the work of associations of persons with disabilities, their achievements and their contribution to the community.
Addressing those present, the Mayor of Smederevo, Jasmina Vojinović, stressed the importance of togetherness, solidarity and partnership between the local government and the associations.
“The Day of Togetherness is an event unique in the whole of Serbia. We do not want togetherness to be tied symbolically to a single day. That is why we strive to stand together throughout the year and to solve all our problems together.
Only united can we overcome the barriers that sometimes stand in our way, support one another and make our city an even better place to live.
The City of Smederevo will remain your support and your mainstay,” the Mayor said, wishing everyone every happiness and good health.

According to the latest figures, around 10,000 persons with disabilities live in Smederevo. Their rights are championed by 24 organisations, 18 of which work in social protection and 6 in sport. At the heart of these organisations is the City Union of Social and Humanitarian Organisations of Smederevo.
“Thanks to the City of Smederevo’s understanding and support, and to our successful cooperation, our organisations are among the most successful in Serbia,” said Ivana Gvozdenović, Secretary of the City Union of Social and Humanitarian Organisations of Smederevo.
The event was officially opened by Predrag Nikolić, President of the City Union of Social and Humanitarian Organisations of Smederevo, who stressed that the “Day of Togetherness” is an opportunity to spend time with fellow citizens and with everyone who wishes to help and support persons with disabilities in Smederevo and across Serbia.
Smederevo Fortress hosted an exhibition of works and handicrafts and of trophies won at sports competitions for persons with disabilities, together with a special programme for all visitors.
The “Day of Togetherness” also marked Cerebral Palsy Day, and green balloons were released as a sign of solidarity.
The event also sent out a shared message: “No one should be excluded or invisible, and no one should be left alone in the fight for their rights. Only together are we strong!”
