Reception for firefighters and rescuers

The Mayor of Smederevo, Jasmina Vojinović, today held a reception for members of the Smederevo Fire and Rescue Unit who this summer took part in fighting wildfires in Spain and in a demanding operation against the blaze in the Deliblato Sands.

“Overcoming fear and raging fire in a foreign country, shoulder to shoulder with your Spanish colleagues, and protecting human lives and dignity is the mark of the greatest heroes.

Without a second’s rest, after exhausting work and a long journey, you showed the same dedication at home, defending our Deliblato Sands and the nearby settlements from a dangerous fire.

Smederevo is proud to have people like you,” the Mayor said.

During the conversation, she particularly stressed the importance of the everyday, often invisible but extremely responsible and risky work they do in our city.

“The public most often sees you on major missions like this, but we do not forget that every day, 24 hours a day, you risk your lives for the safety of our fellow citizens, their property and our homes. Your job is not just a profession, it is a noble calling that demands superhuman strength and an iron will.

The City of Smederevo will always stand by its firefighters and will continue to give its full support and help improve the conditions in which you work, because you are a pillar of safety in our society,” Vojinović concluded.

Milan Ristić, Head of the Department for Emergency Management in Smederevo, pointed out that good coordination and cooperation with the City and all relevant stakeholders are crucial for a timely and effective response.

Smederevo’s firefighters and rescuers thanked the Mayor for the warm welcome and for the local government’s constant support, saying that for them there is no greater reward than a job well done and lives saved, both at home and abroad.
