Activities in Smederevo to mark Danube Day

Published

To mark International Danube Day, celebrated on 29 June, PUC “Zelenilo i groblja”, in cooperation with the City of Smederevo, today carried out a campaign to clean the riverbank and remove wood and floating waste from the river.

“Privileged by the fact that one of Europe’s largest rivers flows right through our city, we are all obliged to look after it together and to keep the riverbed and the bank clean and tidy,” said the Deputy Mayor of the City of Smederevo, Vladimir Nešić.

“This is also a message to the younger generations, who will build the future and who should take care of their city and the River Danube,” the Deputy Mayor added. Together with the Head of the City Administration, Goran Milentijević, he joined the children from the Preschool Institution “Naša radost” Smederevo, who took part in the campaign in a creative and imaginative way.

Dressed up as pirates, mermaids and other symbolic characters inspired by river motifs, and spending time together drawing and colouring on the theme of the Danube, the children and their kindergarten teachers walked along the Danube quay today and talked about the role and importance of this magnificent river.
