With the concert “Danube Rhapsody”, performed by the orchestra of the “Synchrono” Conservatory from Larissa in Greece and the “Svetlost” orchestra from Smederevo, the twelfth Theatre in the Fortress festival came to a formal close last night in the Small Town of Smederevo Fortress, and International Danube Day was marked at the same time.

During the festival, audiences were able to enjoy a variety of high-quality theatre performances every evening, from Tuesday to Saturday, from 21:00.
The performances that marked this year’s Theatre in the Fortress included “Bifem”, performed by the Sava Ognyanov Drama Theatre from the Bulgarian city of Ruse, and “Mati”, interpreted by the Kruševac Theatre, while “A Respectable Wedding” was performed by the Virovitica Theatre from Croatia.
“The Seagull” was performed by actors of the Jordan Hadži Konstantinov Džinot Theatre from the Macedonian town of Veles, while actors of the Serbian Theatre in Hungary appeared in the play “The Spirit Is Our Homeland”.
The accompanying programme included a drawing school on the theme of portraits of Serbian medieval rulers, male and female, led by Danica Jevtić Šišović, a graduate painter specialising in mural painting.
This year’s festival awards were decided by a jury composed of Goran Ibrajter, Executive Director of Sterijino pozorje, Isidora Minić, a drama artist, and Dr Zoran Maksimović, a theatre scholar.
Jelena Vukićević was named best actress of the festival for the role of Teodora in the Kruševac Theatre’s production of “Mati”, and the title of best actor went to Isidor Jovanovski for the role of Trigorin in “The Seagull” by the Macedonian theatre from Veles.
The play “The Spirit Is Our Homeland”, performed by the Serbian Theatre in Hungary, was named best overall production at the 12th Theatre in the Fortress.
The award was presented to the theatre’s representative, Ernest Lacko, at the formal closing of the festival by Vladimir Nešić, Deputy Mayor of Smederevo.
