41st Nušić Days open

Published

The stage of the 41st Nušić Days was officially opened last night at the Cultural Centre in Smederevo.

Before the official opening of the festival, wreaths were laid at the monument to Branislav Nušić on the plaza in front of the Centre.

This was followed by the opening of the photography exhibition “Theatre Is a Shortcut to the Human Soul” and the musical and stage performance “Nušić Symphony”.

The overture to the official opening of the festival was a fitting address about theatre delivered by actor Ljubomir Bandović.

“Over the years, the Nušić Days have become synonymous with high-quality theatre and a gathering place for artists from across the region. Besides being an opportunity for our citizens to enjoy top-class productions, the festival contributes to the development of our city’s cultural scene, promotes dialogue and the exchange of ideas, and encourages creativity and innovation,” the Mayor of Smederevo, Jasmina Vojinović, said as she declared the festival officially open.

After the opening, the Belgrade Drama Theatre performed for the Smederevo audience with the play “Švejk”, directed by Veljko Mićunović.

There are four more productions in the competition programme until the end of the festival, and over the coming evenings the stage of the Smederevo Cultural Centre will host actors of the National Theatre in Belgrade, Atelje 212, the theatre of the Tivat Cultural Centre and the National Theatre from Subotica, with a joint project with the Pula City Theatre.

The award ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, 21 May: the Nušić Award for best overall production based on the jury’s decision, the Nušić Award for best overall production based on the audience vote, the “Milosav Buca Mirković” Award for the most successful acting performance at the festival and the Nušić Lifetime Achievement Award for a comic actor, which this year, by decision of the jury, went to actor Zoran Cvijanović.

The “Nušić Days” theatre festival is held under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia and the City of Smederevo.
