Smederevo City Day was marked with a formal ceremony at the Cultural Centre in Smederevo, in remembrance of Aranđelovdan (St Michael the Archangel’s Day) in 1805, when the Turkish commander, Dizdar Muharem Guša, handed over the keys of the ancient fortress to the leader of the Serbian insurgents, Vožd Karađorđe.

A documentary film about the City of Smederevo was shown at the ceremony, after which those gathered were addressed by Jasmina Vojinović, President of the Provisional Authority of the City of Smederevo.

“Today we have gathered in a festive atmosphere to celebrate the Day of our beloved city of Smederevo. This ceremony is not only an opportunity to remember the rich history and tradition of our city, but also to highlight what we have achieved together as a community. Smederevo, a city that proudly bears the title of a cultural and historical centre, is celebrating its day today with great enthusiasm and with love for all its citizens. A city with a rich past, whose walls have witnessed many historical events, it remains a symbol of unity, growth and prosperity today. This ceremony is an opportunity to thank all the individuals, institutions and organisations that form the heart of our community. Their effort, dedication and love for Smederevo contribute to our shared success. I would also like to thank all the citizens who contribute every day to making our city a special place to live,” she said.

“Our goals are clear. We want to encourage economic growth by creating a favourable business environment. At the same time, as I have mentioned, we will invest even more in modernising and improving infrastructure, education, culture, tourism and sport, and in improving the quality of life of our citizens. Today, on City Day, we have an opportunity to remind ourselves of the values of solidarity, mutual respect and love for our city. May this day encourage us to continue building a better future for us all together. May our hearts be filled with pride because we belong to the city of Smederevo, a place steeped in tradition that at the same time strides boldly towards the future,” Vojinović concluded.
