In connection with the fire that broke out at around 23:00 last night at the city dump in Godominsko polje, an extraordinary session of the City Emergency Situations Headquarters was held today, at which preventive and operational measures to deal with the consequences of the fire were considered.
The session was chaired by the Commander of the Headquarters, the Mayor of the City of Smederevo, Jasmina Vojinović.
In line with the information presented on the state of the fire, the City Emergency Situations Headquarters adopted a conclusion to contact neighbouring cities and municipalities in order to secure additional capacity, namely water tankers, so that the fire can be put out completely and as quickly as possible.
All the competent teams are on the ground and are making every effort to stabilise the situation completely.
The City of Smederevo is also in constant contact with the Ministry of Environmental Protection, which is providing the necessary help and support, and air quality in the territory of the City of Smederevo is being monitored through measuring stations.
The Mayor of Smederevo, Jasmina Vojinović, expressed her immense gratitude to all the firefighters and rescuers, the members of the units from Smederevo and from neighbouring municipalities and cities, the workers of the Smederevo public utility companies “Zelenilo i groblja” and “Vodovod”, the help that arrived from the Steelworks and all the individuals who tirelessly took part in fighting the blaze.
“It is important to point out that the second phase of the remediation of the city dump in Godominsko polje will soon begin, for which the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the City of Smederevo have allocated significant funds.
This process is necessary so that we can finally resolve this decades-old environmental problem.
Our ultimate goal, which we are getting ever closer to, is the complete closure of the dump, which has been located in Godominsko polje for more than 40 years.
This will help protect the environment and will thereby also rule out unpleasant situations such as this fire.
The City of Smederevo is planning to build its own sanitary landfill that meets all environmental standards, because caring for a healthy environment and solving long-standing inherited problems is one of the local government’s most important priorities,” the Mayor stressed after the session of the City Emergency Situations Headquarters.
