Notice: invitation to the second public consultation on the project for the reconstruction of Karađorđeva Street in Smederevo

The second public consultation on the forthcoming reconstruction of Karađorđeva Street, one of the busiest roads in the city, was held today in the Great Hall of the City Administration of Smederevo.

It is a subproject of the Local Infrastructure Development and Institutional Strengthening of Local Governments Project, which is financed by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the French Development Agency and implemented by the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure.

The project envisages three lanes for Karađorđeva Street and greater safety for all road users, especially pedestrians, including children, as the Primary School “Dimitrije Davidović” is nearby.

The details of the project, the legal framework and the importance of the reconstruction of Karađorđeva Street were presented to the interested participants in the public consultation by the designer, Nenad Cvetković, the Head of the Department for Urban Planning, Construction and Investment, Dragan Krstić, and the Deputy Mayor of Smederevo, Vladimir Nešić.

Citizens’ most frequent questions during the public consultation concerned the number of parking spaces and traffic lights planned under the project, with suggestions that building a third lane would mean a loss of parking spaces and that it was unnecessary to install two sets of traffic lights a short distance apart.

In response, the designer stressed that the project is in line with the General Regulation Plan for that part of the city and within the legal framework, and that it had been necessary to take care to find the ideal solution for the street.

Since the project is financed by the World Bank, there are certain conditions and standards that had to be met, some of which relate to environmental protection.

Accordingly, the project provides for an increase in green areas: three times as many trees will be planted, and the existing trees, which are of poorer quality, will be removed.

The project to reconstruct Karađorđeva Street aims to significantly improve the quality of life of all citizens, increase road safety and improve environmental protection, which has become an imperative in the modern world.
