Work of the city government

Results presented and new projects announced

Published

To mark the end of the school year and ahead of the new one, the Mayor of Smederevo today met journalists and reviewed the projects completed and planned.

“The year now ending has been a year of challenges not only for our city, but also for Serbia, yet the local government in Smederevo, with great support from the Government of the Republic of Serbia, the relevant ministries and our President, Aleksandar Vučić, has managed to maintain its stability and to function normally, and we will continue to do so in 2026.

This year was marked by important capital projects that resolve decades-old problems the City of Smederevo had been facing.

The solution to the problem of the non-sanitary landfill at Godominsko polje is already half complete, and next year we will continue rehabilitating the site; the deadline for completing the works is the end of 2026.

We are also considering opening a new landfill that would meet all the necessary environmental standards for the proper management of municipal waste.

This year, 5 lorries were bought for PUC ‘Zelenilo i groblja’, and next year we plan to buy 11 more new lorries and a tractor that will be used for mowing and clearing the land along the roads.

Next year, organised waste collection is also planned to be completed for all rural local communities. At present, waste is collected from 18 villages in the Šumadija part of the city, and in 2026 waste collection will also cover the remaining 9 Morava villages, for which the purchase of 700 containers is planned.

Construction of the vacuum sewerage system in our industrial zone is under way. A third of the work has already been completed, and the deadline for completion is 1 December 2026. This project is of particular importance not only for the City of Smederevo, but also for the country.

This summer we successfully completed the energy renovation of the central ‘Hajdi’ kindergarten. The old boiler room, the worn-out windows and doors and the façade were replaced, and thermal insulation of the attic floor slab and reconstruction of the roof are also planned.

In addition to the earlier opening of kindergartens in Radinac, Skobalj and Drugovac, in March this year we also opened a kindergarten in Kolari, but we are aware that this is not enough, and so we are working on finding solutions to eliminate the waiting lists for kindergarten places for good. We are also working on the project for a new kindergarten in the Monopol building, and we are planning to build a new Central Kitchen building in Papazovac, for which the design is already prepared.

Together with the Ministry of Mining and Energy, we will carry out a project worth RSD 42 million for the energy renovation of the building of the former School of Economics in Smederevo, which now houses the ‘Despot Đurađ’ school.

The reconstruction of the school in Radinac also lies ahead, and we are working on that project, for which the property issue first had to be resolved.

In order to continue supporting citizens in the field of energy efficiency, a new public call for citizens has just been announced, for which we have allocated RSD 35 million together with the Ministry of Mining and Energy. New this year is that socially disadvantaged citizens can also apply under the public call, for subsidies amounting to 90 per cent of the total value of the renovation for most of the defined measures.

As for the projects to convert city boiler houses from heavy fuel oil to gas, we have designs ready for the Miloje Đak and Papazovac boiler houses, and we are completing the design for the Sports Centre boiler house, the construction of which would link the ‘Dud’, ‘Mlin’, ‘Centroprom’ and ‘Parnjača’ boiler houses into a single system.

Work will also be done to reduce the total number of boiler houses in other parts of the city by connecting certain important buildings to the same system, such as the buildings of the Pension and Disability Insurance Fund (PIO) and the Republic Health Insurance Fund (RFZO).

Among the City’s most important decisions is the increase in funding for the costs of in vitro fertilisation (from the previous RSD 400,000, the amount was increased to RSD 600,000 in 2025), for an unlimited number of attempts, with no age limit, as well as the reimbursement of costs for the previous period of one year, for couples who want to become parents. Last year we funded 5 couples, and this year 11.

Also significant is the permanent solution to the housing problem of 15 families of disabled war veterans and fallen soldiers.

From 1 January 2026, persons with veteran status will be granted certain benefits reducing their payment obligations for certain utility services by 20 per cent.

The City of Smederevo has also taken important steps to improve the position of persons with disabilities. Under the budget plan for next year, the local government will co-finance the work of associations of persons with disabilities with RSD 23 million, which is 3 million more than in 2025.

For the families of refugees and internally displaced persons, as well as returnees under readmission agreements, public calls for the purchase of food and firewood with transport are under way, and in the coming period we will announce public calls for the purchase of building materials and of rural houses with garden plots.

This year, together with the Ministry of Rural Welfare, we provided housing for two families from the territory of the City of Smederevo through the purchase of a rural house with a garden plot.

In cooperation with the Ministry of Health and the Medical Centre ‘Sveti Luka’ in Smederevo, we plan to prepare the design for the construction of a new hospital, for which the City has bought a plot of 11 hectares. The City is also continuing its practice of employing general practitioners, because health workers are very important to us and very much needed.

With the reconstruction of Karađorđeva Street, we will gain a modern, wider and safer road in the city centre, with a new carriageway, pavements, parking spaces and green areas. The City will invest additional funds in building the water, sewerage and heating infrastructure network in this street.

Another priority for next year is completing the design documentation for the Morava Water Supply System. In addition, through expropriation we need to resolve the property status, that is, to purchase all the plots required for the ‘Segda’ site in Radinac and the ‘Vampirača’ site in Mihajlovac.

In the Mali Krivak neighbourhood, the construction of the water supply network will be followed by the installation of water meters, and the neighbourhood has also been asphalted.

In addition, in 2025 work was carried out on the construction of foul sewer and sewerage networks with a total length of 702 metres. Water supply networks with a total length of 3,500 metres were also built.

The sewerage design for Radinac has also been completed, as part of wider plans to improve living conditions in all parts of the city.

One of the important tasks we will work on next year is the design of the district heating pipeline, on which PE ‘Urbanizam’ Smederevo has been engaged.

Additional land has also been acquired to extend the central cemetery in Šeškovac, and we also plan to buy plots for this purpose in some villages, as we did this year.

Through a public-private partnership, 152 kilometres of city and village streets in the territory of the city will be rehabilitated and maintained as part of the local road infrastructure.

We have also prepared the design for the rehabilitation of Despota Stefana, Kralja Milutina and Vojvode Mišića Streets.

It is important to say that we have already secured 40,000 tonnes of milled asphalt for surfacing both suburban and village streets, covering 50 kilometres of roads.

We are also well advanced with the legalisation of buildings through the ‘Svoj na svome’ project launched by our President, Aleksandar Vučić.

We have also continued the support programme for implementing active employment policy measures, subsidies for agricultural producers, and the continued holding of traditional tourism, cultural and sporting events.

After the football stadium by the Danube became the property of the City, this year we laid an artificial turf pitch and enabled the club to train, play and host visiting teams.

Finally, I want to say that as Mayor I have an obligation to work even more, more strongly, more decisively and better in the coming year, so that through more frequent and direct meetings with citizens we can overcome all challenges together even faster and more successfully.

We are entering 2026 with optimism and faith in new opportunities. I believe it will be a year of new ideas and results for the benefit of all,” said the Mayor, Jasmina Vojinović, among other things, thanking the media for reporting objectively on the work of the local government in Smederevo.
