Press release from the City Administration of the City of Smederevo on unpleasant odours in the city

Published

Businesses operating in the City of Smederevo whose activities may generate unpleasant odours in the production process have recently been inspected. No irregularities were found in their operations. There were also no incidents, chemical accidents or disruptions in the operation of the businesses inspected.

Due to the frequent emission of unpleasant odours, which intensifies as temperatures rise, at the end of May 2024 the inspectorate notified the Ministry of Environmental Protection so that further measures could be taken, bearing in mind the proximity of other businesses in the neighbouring municipality.

On 12 August 2024 and 13 August 2024, when intense unpleasant odours reappeared, environmental protection inspectors carried out inspections and established that the unpleasant odours in the city were coming from the fertilising of arable land with farmyard manure in the area between the industrial zone and Godomin in Smederevo.

This is fertiliser of organic origin, brought from farms and agricultural holdings, which is used to fertilise arable land after the harvest in order to improve soil quality. The intensity of these odours depends on the temperature, the air pressure and the wind that carries them towards the city. Disc harrowing of the fertilised fields is under way in order to reduce the intensity of the unpleasant odours.

The environmental protection inspectorate has notified the agricultural inspectorate of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management so that it can take measures within its competence.
