This weekend, the Small Town of Smederevo Fortress is the setting for the “Knights and Legends” festival, an event whose programme takes visitors back for a moment to the time of medieval Serbia and the age of chivalry.
Today and tomorrow, everyone who visits the festival will have the chance to watch knights’ combat, attend the final of the knights’ tournament and enjoy a spectacle of fire and sword play. Those who wish can join interactive workshops and try their hand at all kinds of crafts and skills, such as fencing and archery. All this will be complemented by performances by ensembles and music groups, as well as medieval dance numbers.

Credit for this unusual experience in the Small Town of Smederevo Fortress goes to its organisers and patrons: the Smederevo Cultural Centre, PE “Smederevska tvrđava”, the Association for the Preservation of Old Crafts and Skills “Beli orlovi” and the City of Smederevo.
“Smederevo Fortress, the first capital of the Serbian Despotate, was built in difficult times as a bulwark that defended not only the territory but also the heart of our people.
On these walls, knights wrote pages of history with their lives, defending their homes, families and faith, and their loyalty and courage remain a lasting inspiration to us all and a reminder of a time when honour was the most important virtue,” the Mayor of Smederevo, Jasmina Vojinović, said as she declared the festival officially open.

Before the opening of the “Knights and Legends” festival, the Mayor of Smederevo, Jasmina Vojinović, and the President of the City Assembly, Milan Perić, symbolically cut the ribbon to open the reconstructed bridge at the entrance to the Small Town.
In addition to competitors from Serbia, this year’s “Knights and Legends” festival brought together participants from Romania, Italy, France, Republika Srpska…
