International Šarlov Cup 2024 regatta in Smederevo

Published

Organised by the Boating Club “Metalac” with the support of the City, the International Sailing Regatta Šarlov Cup 2024 is being held in Smederevo today and tomorrow.

It includes races in the 470, ILCA 4, ILCA 6 and Optimist classes.

Competitors were welcomed at the start of the regatta by Radislav Maravić, President of the Boating Club “Metalac”, and the event was officially declared open by the Mayor of Smederevo, Jasmina Vojinović.

“This is another opportunity to return to the Danube, because it is a priceless asset that we have as a city, with almost 25 kilometres of its banks in Smederevo. We have not made sufficient use of the Danube’s potential, and in the coming period our aim is to bring the Danube as close as possible to the citizens of Smederevo, to return it to the city and to make it a meeting place through competitions like this one and similar ones.

Smederevo is a city that strongly supports sporting activities. In the coming period we will have to devote more attention to sports clubs involved in competitions on the water,” the Mayor said, among other things, wishing all the participants in the regatta good results and a pleasant stay in Smederevo, which this weekend is celebrating the 137th Smederevo Autumn.

The regatta has a long tradition and has been held in Smederevo more than 20 times.

This year it brought together around 70 participants from sailing clubs in Serbia, as well as competitors from North Macedonia, members of the “Akvatika Jahting” club from Ohrid, which is a sister club of Smederevo’s Boating Club “Metalac”.

The Boating Club “Metalac” Smederevo was founded in 1946 and is one of the oldest clubs in Serbia. It has achieved notable success at numerous competitions, including two European Cup wins.
