Repair works on the toe of the Danube embankment in Smederevo, 160 metres in total length, are expected to be completed by the end of this week.
During a visit to the works, which are being carried out between the Vertical Quay and the Rowing Club, the Mayor of Smederevo, Jasmina Vojinović, in conversation with Luka Matović, Director of the Water Management Company from Smederevo, confirmed that this work is very important for the city, because a secure and repaired embankment protects the city from high water levels on the Danube and possible flooding.
“We have shown once again that, through well-coordinated cooperation between the President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, the Government and the local government in Smederevo, we can carry out many projects, including the improvement of the Danube embankment, which must continue in the coming period, especially as we know that work is also starting on preparing the site for the future marina in Smederevo. Our aim is to return the river to the city and the city to the river, the Mayor points out, adding that Smederevo has great potential with the Danube, which has not been sufficiently exploited so far.
“The value of these works is around RSD 5 million including VAT, and they are financed by “Elektroprivreda Srbije”, branch HPP “Đerdap 1”, Riverbank Maintenance Section. The material for this work was procured at the beginning of the year, but we waited for the level of the Danube to fall so that we could carry it out successfully,” says Luka Matović, Director of the Smederevo Water Management Company, which is the contractor. On this section, 530 cubic metres of stone were used, laid by hand and mortared to protect the embankment.
During today’s visit to the final stage of the works, it was announced that talks are under way between the local government in Smederevo, the Harbour Master’s Office, the Ministry of Construction and the Port Governance Agency on improving a new section of the embankment, which will briefly require the relocation of the tourist pier near the Silos.
