Published

On the initiative of and organised by the Association “Urbana desetka”, the “Danube Ten” street race was held in Smederevo today for the first time. The event was supported by the City of Smederevo and the Smederevo Athletics Club.

The men and women taking part competed over a 10-kilometre course. The race started at 9:00 in front of the Museum and followed a route along the Danube to the Obrenović Villa and back. It lasted two hours and finished at the Fortress with the presentation of awards in the men’s and women’s categories.

In the men’s race, first place went to Miloš Dragović, second to Miloš Dajević and third to Marko Miljković. In the women’s race, first place was won by Verica Đorđević, second by Jovana Stanković and third by Jelena Paunović. In addition to trophies and sponsors’ gifts, they received cash prizes of RSD 20,000 for first place, RSD 15,000 for second and RSD 10,000 for third. All competitors who successfully completed the race were awarded “Danube Ten” medals, and the sponsors received letters of thanks.

“The idea is for the city to have its own race, like many other cities in Serbia, for it to become a tradition and to gain new features from year to year,” says Marko Gordić, President of the Sports Association “Urbana desetka”, who announced that in future the “Danube Ten” could become a half marathon or a marathon.

The race brought together 570 participants from Smederevo and other Serbian cities, as well as competitors from abroad, and so took on an international character in its very first edition.

In gratitude for its support, the City of Smederevo was presented with a plaque, which was received by the Mayor of Smederevo, Jasmina Vojinović.

“The local government was pleased to support the idea of launching this event, because we recognised that it would promote our city and its sporting spirit, which we want to nurture in the future too.

Today has already shown that Smederevo has the potential to organise this sporting event, and we are delighted that it has brought together so many participants,” the Mayor said at the award ceremony.

The “Danube Ten” was also a challenge for many recreational runners, from the youngest to the oldest residents, and everyone agreed that it contributed to a very pleasant atmosphere in the city this weekend.
