This morning, the Mayor of Smederevo, Jasmina Vojinović, visited the landfill at Godominsko polje, where a fire broke out yesterday afternoon.
“The fire was spotted at around 16:50, and by 17:10 firefighters with four vehicles had already arrived at the site, along with crews from our PUC ‘Zelenilo i groblja’ with two of their vehicles and one vehicle from the Steelworks.
The good thing in all this is that it is a surface fire and that, thanks to an effective operation, it was contained very quickly. During the night we were in contact with the Minister of Environmental Protection, Irena Vujović; this is a responsible approach by the Ministry towards local governments and, for me as a new mayor, a sign of support in situations like this.
The local government in Smederevo has long been working on the project to close the non-sanitary landfill at Godominsko polje, and we expect construction of the Transfer Station, which will solve the problem of waste disposal in an environmentally safe way, to be completed on 18 July,” the Mayor of Smederevo said while visiting the landfill.
