With the cutting of the slava bread at the Church of St George, Smederevo marked its City patron saint’s day, Easter Monday. The Holy Hierarchical Liturgy was served by His Grace Ignatije, Bishop of Braničevo.
In addition to worshippers and clergy, the celebration of the City patron saint’s day was attended by the Mayor of Smederevo, Jovan Beč, the Deputy President of the City Assembly of Smederevo, Branče Stojanović, and Maja Ćirković, Member of the City Council responsible for culture, tourism and information.
After the Holy Hierarchical Liturgy, the worshippers were offered slava bread, boiled wheat and Easter eggs.
The Smederevo religious procession was already held in the time of Despot Đurađ Branković, and since 2002, following a decision of the Assembly, the City patron saint’s day has been celebrated.
“It is a great honour to talk to a man such as Bishop Ignatije, because we can learn a great deal from him and gain new hope and energy, and faith that with seriousness and responsibility we can have a better future,” Mayor Beč stressed, among other things, on social media.
