The City of Smederevo is continuing to tackle the issue of waste management resolutely across its entire territory.
Following the successful inclusion of 18 villages in the Šumadija part of the city in the organised waste collection system, the installation of containers began today in the remaining settlements in the Morava part of the city as well.
The village of Lipe will have 90 containers for municipal waste, and the village of Mala Krsna is next in line.
The local government’s aim is for every household, regardless of its distance from the city centre, to have basic and modern utility services.
In the coming period, all the villages in the Morava part will be integrated into the system, and at the same time work will be done to identify and permanently remove illegal dumps.
As a direct result of these activities, one illegal dump has already been removed in Lipe, and a second one is expected to be cleared as soon as possible.
Clearing dumps remains an absolute priority for all villages in which illegal dumps have been recorded.
The City of Smederevo appeals to citizens to behave responsibly towards the environment and to dispose of waste only in the places designated for it.
This prevents new dumps from appearing, as well as the risk of fire, such as the one recorded last weekend at the city dump in Godominsko polje.
In cooperation with the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the City is continuing the second phase of the remediation and recultivation of the non-sanitary landfill at that location.
This strategic process is key to finally resolving an environmental problem that is decades old.
“Our ultimate goal is a clean, modern and environmentally aware city. The complete closure of the dump in Godominsko polje is the most significant environmental undertaking in our city in the last few decades, and with it we are securing a healthier future for generations to come,” says the Mayor of Smederevo, Jasmina Vojinović.
