The 139th Smederevo Autumn has begun in Smederevo: a festival that for almost fourteen decades has preserved the spirit of the city, celebrated the fruits of autumn and brought all generations together around wine, grapes, tradition, song and dance.
The opening ceremony was held at the Cultural Centre, which also hosted the Business Exhibition.
As is traditional, the ceremony began with an address by Despot Đurađ and the symbolic handing over of the keys of Smederevo Fortress to the Mayor, Jasmina Vojinović, who declared the festival open.
“I am particularly pleased that we are opening this year’s festival together with our business community, because it is precisely in this combination of tradition, work and creativity that the image of Smederevo is best captured.
For almost fourteen decades, Smederevo Autumn has celebrated the most precious gifts that nature has given us and that the hard-working hands of our farmers have nurtured.
It is not just a tradition. It is the calling card of our region, a testament to continuity and living proof that in Smederevo the fruits of the earth have been respected, preserved and celebrated since time immemorial.
We gather once again to celebrate grapes and wine, fruit and the agriculture for which the Smederevo area is known throughout our country and far beyond its borders.
But what makes Smederevo special is not only the fruits of our land. Above all, it is the people.
People who create and believe in their city.
That is why the Business Exhibition is also an important part of Smederevo Autumn.
It gives us the opportunity to present Smederevo as a city of ideas and knowledge.
The city that was once a capital and a bulwark of defence is today a bulwark of our cultural and economic development.
And that is exactly why Smederevo Autumn has a special power.
It connects what we have inherited with what we are creating for the future.
Over the coming days, Smederevo, as a good host, will be a place of meeting, socialising, song and dance,” the Mayor said at the opening ceremony of the 139th Smederevo Autumn, inviting everyone present to enjoy the rich programme in the days ahead.
Over the weekend, Smederevo will remain a place of meeting, good cheer, song, dance, wine and gastronomic flavours. The programmes will take place on the City Square, in the Wine Town and at Smederevo Fortress.
