Visit to the “Despot Đurađ” school farm

Published

On the occasion of School Day and the slava of St Tryphon, patron saint of winegrowers, the Mayor of Smederevo, Jasmina Vojinović, today visited the farm of the Textile-Technical and Agricultural School “Despot Đurađ”.

On that occasion, she stressed the importance of education in agriculture and of preserving the tradition and knowledge passed on to generations of young people.

“Smederevo is proud to preserve its centuries-old winegrowing tradition, and the “Despot Đurađ” school makes its full contribution to this.

Smederevo is known not only for its vineyards, but also as an area of hard-working farmers. Agriculture is not only a tradition, but also an opportunity for the future and for new jobs. That is exactly why it is important that we have an educational institution like this, where young people are prepared for their future occupations and to become the drivers of the further development of our agriculture.

It is up to us to preserve what our ancestors left us, and also to create the conditions for young people to stay here and to see their opportunity and their future in Smederevo,” she said, congratulating the staff and pupils on School Day, and announced works on the energy renovation of the school building, which will be carried out in the coming period.

In the spirit of the feast of St Tryphon, the slava bread was then cut at the school farm and the vines were pruned, marking the start of a new production year for winegrowers, whom the Mayor of Smederevo, Jasmina Vojinović, wished a successful season.

The “Despot Đurađ” school is celebrating 35 years of existence and work. It currently has 230 pupils training to become veterinary technicians, environmental protection technicians, fashion tailors, bakers and butchers.

It has a farm that includes facilities for raising pigs and sheep, as well as 80 hectares of land.

A vineyard has been planted on a plot of 20 ares, where today, in a festive atmosphere, the first pruning took place and the vines were sprinkled with wine.
