At around five o’clock this morning, a fire was spotted at the non-sanitary landfill in Godominsko polje, after which fire and rescue unit crews and the competent office of the City Administration in Smederevo responsible for emergencies immediately arrived at the site.
All available resources, construction machinery and fire and rescue units have been deployed to put out the fire.
In all likelihood the fire was caused by human factors, but more details about the incident will be known once the competent services of the Ministry of Interior have carried out their inspection.
As the fire at the City Landfill in Smederevo has led to an increased concentration of smoke, citizens are asked to follow these recommendations until the danger has passed:
- stay indoors whenever possible;
- keep windows and doors closed to reduce the amount of smoke getting indoors;
- avoid spending long periods and doing physical activity outdoors;
- pay particular attention to protecting children, older people, pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses, especially those with heart and lung conditions;
- if you experience health problems, contact your nearest healthcare facility immediately or call the emergency medical service;
- follow official notices from the competent authorities and act in accordance with their instructions.
We also ask citizens not to spread unverified information and to help protect everyone’s health and safety by behaving responsibly.
We would remind you that works are under way in Godominsko polje to close the non-sanitary landfill, which will resolve the decades-old problem of waste disposal in Smederevo and significantly reduce the risk of fires breaking out.
