The Ambassador of the Republic of India to the Republic of Serbia, His Excellency Abhishek Shukla, visited Smederevo today and was given a formal reception at the City Administration by the Mayor of Smederevo, Jasmina Vojinović, and the President of the City Assembly of Smederevo, Milan Perić.
Extending a warm welcome to the Ambassador, Mayor Jasmina Vojinović said that relations between Serbia and India are founded on a long tradition of friendship, mutual respect and understanding, as well as on shared values that came to the fore especially at the time the Non-Aligned Movement was founded.
She thanked India for its principled position and consistent support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Serbia, and for not recognising the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo.
The talks covered opportunities for establishing and developing cooperation between Smederevo and India.
The Mayor presented Smederevo’s potential, its rich history and cultural heritage, and the local government’s efforts to create a favourable business environment, develop infrastructure and improve citizens’ quality of life.
The meeting highlighted that there is considerable scope for exchanging experience and strengthening ties with India, which is recognised as one of the world’s major centres of manufacturing, innovation and sustainable development.
Ambassador Abhishek Shukla took up his post in Belgrade on 8 January 2026. Before coming to Serbia, he held senior diplomatic positions within the Ministry of External Affairs of India.
The Ambassador’s visit is an important opportunity to further strengthen the traditionally friendly relations between Serbia and India and to open up new opportunities for cooperation at local level.
After the reception at the City Administration, he toured the cultural landmarks of Smederevo, accompanied by his hosts.
