Organised by the Niš branches of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU) and of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the Serbian Medical Society, and by the Smederevo Branch of the Serbian Medical Society, the symposium “Current Topics in Medicine 1” was held in Smederevo.
The gathering brought together the most eminent experts, who discussed modern approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of urological and oncological diseases, rare diseases, and the increasingly important role of artificial intelligence in psychiatry.
At the opening ceremony, the first to speak was the Mayor of Smederevo, Jasmina Vojinović, who stressed that the City deeply respects the work of health workers.
“Being a doctor is not just an occupation, but a calling that demands enormous knowledge, responsibility and, above all, humanity. It is our duty to improve the conditions for your work so that you can build your professional future in your own city and country, which the President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, also strongly advocates,” the Mayor said. She added that she is particularly pleased by the trend of medical professionals returning from abroad because they want to work in Serbia.
The working part of the symposium began with a lecture by Academician Jovan Hadži Đokić, the renowned Serbian urologist. During his distinguished career, Academician Hadži Đokić introduced numerous innovative surgical techniques into practice in Serbia and published more than 400 scientific papers. For his contribution to science and the state, he was also awarded the Order of the Star of Karađorđe, Third Class.
Particular emphasis was placed on his long-standing contribution to Smederevo through consultancy work, numerous operations and the mentoring of local urologists. As a token of gratitude, the Mayor, Jasmina Vojinović, presented him with a special award: the Silver Coin of the City of Smederevo.
