Another Despot Wine Fest was officially opened this evening in the unique setting of Smederevo Fortress. The authentic surroundings of the fortress and the great interest of exhibitors and visitors confirm the importance of this event and Smederevo’s position as one of the best-known wine destinations in Serbia.
The event was officially opened by the Mayor of Smederevo, Jasmina Vojinović.

“We are in the beautiful setting of the medieval fortress of Despot Đurađ Branković. It is not only a symbol of our city, but also the perfect place for new stories about the wine for which Smederevo is famous far and wide.
We are especially proud to point out that the indigenous Smederevka is our hallmark, as there are few cities in the world that have given their name to a grape variety.
From Roman times, through the royal vineyards of the Obrenović dynasty and the worldwide fame confirmed in Bordeaux in 1882, Smederevo has for centuries built its name as a wine region whose quality and tradition endure to this day.
Year after year, thanks to our hard-working local winemakers, we successfully combine the past and the present.
Smederevo has always been a good host and we are delighted to open our doors and our hearts to every guest,” the Mayor said at the opening ceremony, adding that the festival is a special opportunity to honour producers from Smederevo, the whole of Serbia and the region, with the aim of promoting top winemakers and strengthening the city’s tourism potential.
Over the two days of the festival, visitors will be able to enjoy a rich programme featuring fine wines and rakijas, carefully selected gastronomic specialities, expert talks, creative workshops and a varied musical programme.
The festival also includes an international wine competition and awards for the most successful wineries.
