Published

Organised by the City Union of Social and Humanitarian Organisations of Smederevo, the “Day of Togetherness” event was held today on the City Square, bringing together organisations of persons with disabilities, citizens and the city leadership.

The event is being held in Smederevo for the third time and is unique in Serbia.

Besides bringing the member organisations together, its aim is to increase the social visibility of persons with disabilities, to offer an insight into their work, potential and sporting and creative abilities, and to contribute to the development of an inclusive society.

The event was officially opened by Predrag Nikolić, President of the City Union of Social and Humanitarian Organisations of Smederevo, who stressed that the “Day of Togetherness” is an opportunity to spend time with fellow citizens and to present the Union’s achievements over many years.

“The ‘Day of Togetherness’ enables us, together with the City Union of Social and Humanitarian Organisations, to show that we live alongside one another, to express understanding and solidarity, to talk about our common goals and to spend time together.

Besides financing various services for persons with disabilities, the City of Smederevo, through the Strategy for the Development of Social Protection, is also carrying out a range of other actions and support measures aimed at greater social inclusion and consistent respect for rights, with equal opportunities for all,” said the Mayor of Smederevo, Jasmina Vojinović, greeting the participants and the citizens gathered, who today also had the chance to watch a special programme by members of the City Union of Social and Humanitarian Organisations and service users of the “Sunce” Institution.

An exhibition of their works and handicrafts, as well as of trophies from sports competitions, was also staged on the City Square.

According to the latest figures, around 10,000 persons with disabilities live in Smederevo. Their rights are championed by 24 organisations, 18 of which work in social protection and 6 in sport.
