Old Municipal Hall Building

The Old Municipal Hall Building is one of the most prestigious architectural landmarks in Smederevo and a significant example of the architectural heritage of the first half of the twentieth century.

Address
Trg Republike 5

Located on Trg Republike, in the very centre of the city, it is an important part of Smederevo’s historical and architectural identity.

It was built between 1926 and 1928 to a design by the renowned architect Nikolai Petrovich Krasnov, one of the most prominent exponents of academic historicism in Serbian interwar architecture. Construction was initiated on the proposal of the municipal councillors and the Association of Benefactors, which provided the land and contributed in part to financing the works. The building was originally intended to house the municipal administration.

The building was designed in the spirit of eclecticism, characteristic of the architecture of the 1920s. Its monumental appearance, harmonious proportions and richly decorated façade bear witness to Smederevo’s development as an important administrative and economic centre in the period between the two world wars.

Of particular architectural value are the four sculptures above the main entrance, symbolising justice, labour, science and culture. The building’s grandeur is also reflected in its interior, with marble floors, decoratively finished walls, a wide staircase with a wrought-iron balustrade and an elliptical ceremonial hall.

Throughout its history the building has served various administrative purposes. From 1975 until early 1992 it housed the Podunavlje Intermunicipal Regional Community, and since March 1992 it has been home to the offices of the Podunavlje Administrative District.

Owing to its historical, architectural and townscape value, the Old Municipal Hall Building has the status of an immovable cultural property, a cultural monument. Today it is one of the most recognisable buildings in the old town centre and a valuable testimony to the architectural development of Smederevo.
