Church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God

The Church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God is one of the most important medieval cultural monuments in Smederevo.

Address
Narodnog fronta

It stands in the central part of the Old Smederevo Cemetery and is a valuable testimony to the city’s spiritual, cultural and architectural heritage.

The church is believed to have been built in the first half of the fifteenth century, at the time of the medieval Serbian state. The exact year of construction and the name of its founder have not been reliably established, and its origins are attributed to this period on the basis of its architectural features.

In its architectural features, the church belongs to the Morava school, which is characteristic of Serbian medieval architecture. Of particular artistic value are its wall paintings, which are thought to date from the end of the sixteenth century.

Archaeological research carried out in 1982 showed that the church was built on the site of an older necropolis, which further testifies to the long historical significance of this place.

Owing to its historical, architectural and artistic value, the church was declared a cultural monument in 1947 and in 1979 was categorised as an immovable cultural property of great importance.

Today the Church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God is an important part of Smederevo’s cultural and historical heritage and one of the most valuable testimonies to the city’s medieval past.
