Church Municipality Building in Smederevo

The Church Municipality Building is a significant example of urban architecture from the first half of the twentieth century and a valuable part of Smederevo's architectural heritage.

Address
Trg Republike 12

Located on Trg Republike, close to the former Hotel “Ninić”, the building contributes through its appearance to the distinctive architectural identity of the old town centre.

It was built in 1925, most probably to a design by Professor Zađević, during a period of intensive economic and urban development in Smederevo. It was originally a residential and commercial building, with business premises on the ground floor and flats on the upper floors.

The building was designed under the influence of the leading architectural trends of the third decade of the twentieth century, with elements of Modernism. Its architecture reflects a striving for functionality and the harmonious design of urban buildings, with decorative details characteristic of the building practice of the time.

Of particular value is the main façade, whose vertical division is emphasised by shallow pilasters. Their upper sections feature relief depictions of human figures, which give the building a distinctive decorative character.

The building consists of a basement, a ground floor, two upper floors and an attic. The top floor is set back from the main façade and designed with a spacious roof terrace, which is one of the distinctive features of its architectural design.

Together with the former Hotel “Ninić” and the Old Municipal Hall, the Church Municipality Building forms an important part of the architectural ensemble of Trg Republike. The construction of these prestigious buildings during the 1920s contributed to the transformation of the central urban area and to the development of Smederevo as a modern urban centre.

With its historical, architectural and townscape value, the Church Municipality Building is a valuable testimony to the development of Smederevo’s urban architecture between the two world wars.
